Sri Lanka’s Agriculture Dip Forces Residents to Seek Loans to Pay For Necessities.
Approximately 40% of households in Sri Lanka rely on agriculture as their primary source of income. From June to December 2022, 20% of these households experienced a reduction in income. To cope with this loss of income, half of affected households have resorted to negative coping mechanisms such as taking out loans in order to afford food and other necessities. In response to this situation, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has appealed for support from all individuals and groups, regardless of political affiliation.
