USDA Crop Progress Report – Week of April 14, 2025 Planting Slow to Start, but Even with Last Year in Spring Wheat

The USDA released its first major crop progress update for the 2025 planting season, and while some areas have begun fieldwork, national averages show a slightly delayed start compared to last year—particularly for corn and soybeans. However, spring wheat remains right on track.

Corn planting is just 4% complete, compared to 6% this time last year.

Major contributors this week:

  • Texas: 63% planted
  • North Carolina: 19%
  • Kansas: 11%
  • Missouri: 9%
  • Tennessee: 7%

Midwestern states such as Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana have barely begun, with most reporting just 1-2% planted.


🌱 Soybean Planting Progress

Soybean planting is 2% complete, down slightly from 3% this week last year.

Key highlights:

  • Louisiana: 22% planted
  • Mississippi: 15%
  • Arkansas: 14%
  • Tennessee: 5%

Spring wheat planting is 7% complete, identical to the same week in 2024—suggesting a normal start in the Northern Plains.

Current progress:

  • Idaho: 3%

  • Montana: 2%
  • South Dakota & Washington: 1%

North Dakota, which accounts for nearly half of the U.S. spring wheat acreage, has yet to report measurable planting progress.
