Crop Conditions Show Stable Start for U.S. Row Crops

June 1, 2025 Crop Conditions

The latest USDA Crop Progress report for the week ending June 1, 2025, confirms a stable early-season outlook across major row crops. Corn and soybeans are now largely planted, and conditions reflect generally favorable growing weather in May. Meanwhile, wheat fields show mixed results as harvest nears in the southern Plains and spring wheat emergence continues farther north.

Crop Conditions Breakdown

Corn

As of June 1, 2025, U.S. corn conditions are solidly favorable. The crop was rated Good to Excellent on 69% of acres nationally (57% Good, 12% Excellent), with only 5% falling under Poor or Very Poor categories. Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri showed some of the highest early scores, while areas in the Ohio Valley still show some signs of moisture-related stress. With planting essentially complete, market participants will now shift their focus to June weather patterns and pollination risks.

Soybeans

Soybeans also showed a favorable early rating, with 58% Good and 9% Excellent, totaling 67% Good to Excellent. Just 5% of the crop fell in the Poor or Very Poor categories. This initial snapshot reflects mostly successful emergence and warm May conditions. Iowa, Nebraska, and parts of the Delta reported some of the most promising early stand assessments.

Spring Wheat

Spring wheat posted more moderate early scores with 50% Good to Excellent and 13% rated as Fair. North Dakota, Montana, and South Dakota are all trending slightly weaker than average, while Minnesota and Washington are off to a relatively stronger start. A cool, wet spring in parts of the north may continue to limit emergence pace and vigor in the short term.

Winter Wheat

As harvest picks up in Texas and Oklahoma, the winter wheat crop remains split. 52% of acres were rated Good or Excellent, while 18% were classified as Poor or Very Poor. Kansas, Oklahoma, and southern Illinois reflect the widest variability in condition, making this a high-variance crop heading into yield determination.
