Trading Soybean Futures

Soybeans have become a major global crop, and soybean futures offer a very liquid market for participants. More than 200,000 contracts are traded on average daily.

Supply:

In terms of oilseed production, Brazil takes the lead with an estimated 149 MMT for the 2022 season, followed by the United States at 119.15 MMT, and Argentina at 51 MMT. The total global oilseed production is estimated at 389.765 MMT.

Brazil plants soybeans from September to November, and harvests from January to March. On the other hand, in the U.S. and other Northern Hemisphere areas, the growing season for soybeans is from May to June for planting, and from September to October for harvesting.

Demand:

When it comes to soybean consumption, China leads the world, importing an estimated 97 MMT. The EU follows as the second-largest importer of oilseeds, with an estimated 14.8 MMT.

Regarding soybean crushing, China’s program is the largest in the world. Estimated at 95 MMT. The United States has the second-largest program, estimated at 60.55 MMT. Followed by Brazil, at 50.5 MMT, and Argentina at 41.00 MMT.

Ending Stocks:

The estimated global ending stocks of soybeans have decreased from 120.72 MMT last month to 119 MMT, while showing an increase from 108.49 MMT from the previous year.

The largest ending stocks are held by China, estimated at 30.455 MMT, followed by Brazil at 29.36 MMT, Argentina at 25.4 MMT, and the U.S. at 5.44 MMT.
